Overview

With the current tightening of the labour market globally, good negotiation skills will become ever more important. This course will facilitate student engagement with the vital business, and indeed life, skill of negotiation. An ability to negotiate is a skill that we all need and use almost every day. Indeed, a lot of the time we are not even aware that we are negotiating when we are doing just that. Although this course is predominantly focused on negotiation in the business arena, the overarching principles are applicable in any negotiation context. The course aims to take students on a learning journey by the end of which they will be better equipped to negotiate and will have begun to develop their own unique negotiating style.

 

Programme Aims and Objectives

Aims
Identify core human behaviours and work processes that the students will be exposed to in their careers and assist them in successfully navigating them.

Objectives 

  • Expose students to a number of different negotiation environments as they apply in a variety of contexts- such as job applications, disputes, social dilemmas and of course business.

  • Enable students to assess the three key aspects of a negotiation scenario – self assessment, situational assessment and other side assessment.

  • Identify the relevance of the behavior, emotions and motivations of others in negotiation settings and determine their own unique negotiation type.

  • Develop a toolkit of useful negotiation skills, strategies, and approaches.

Assessment

To meet the requirements of the Diploma in Negotiation, a student will be required to successfully complete an exam (40%) and continuous assessment in form of:  Course participation – (20%). Weekly Learning Journal - 20%, Class Presentation – 20%, Final Negotiation Practical (20%) and Negotiation Practical Self-Assessment (20%). The use of case studies to further enhance learning will also be integral to this programme.

Please note this programme is not on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

Course Content

This course is designed to give the student a grounding in the central concepts in negotiation as they apply in a variety of contexts and help students recognise their own unique negotiating style. This programme covers a wide range of topics from negotiation strategy, cross-cultural negotiation, salary negotiation etc. Some of the key subject areas include:

  • Introduction to Negotiation

  • Preparation for Negotiation

  • Distributive Negotiation – “Slicing the Pie”

  • Win-Win Negotiation

  • Developing a Negotiation Style

  • Dispute Resolution

  • Persuasion

  • Multiple Parties, Coalitions and Teams

  • Rationality and Lie Detection

  • Cross Cultural Negotiation

  • Tacit Negotiations and Social Dilemmas

  • Negotiating a Job Offer /Salary Review

  • Negotiation via Information

Structure

The Diploma in Negotiation is offered as a part-time programme over 12 weeks. Students will engage with weekly topic areas through short, faculty led presentations and guided discussion that will be reinforced by role plays, case studies and group work. Guest/faculty speakers will share real-world negotiation experiences and offer an insight into the life of a professional negotiator. Moodle will be used to facilitate student engagement with resources, as well as provide an interactive space for learning journal collaboration.

Career Opportunities

Negotiation is a skillset that is central to many careers and business activities. On completion of this programme students will have the knowledge and skills to work in a variety of positions which require excellent leadership and negotiation skills. This programme will be particularly suitable for those who are willing to acquire skills necessary to advance within their current business and non-business roles.

Student Profile

Typical students will have an awareness of the subject of negotiation but have not previously been trained in the subject. This course is geared to a foundation level but has proven to be equally useful at executive education level given its systematic and sequential analysis of all core aspects of negotiation.

Fees

  • DBS Careers and Appointment Service- which provides a range of services for Diploma students such as career advice and workshops in CV writing and interview skills. 

  • Subsidised Parking- DBS provides subsidised parking arrangements for students, which provides easy access to all main public transport routes in and out of the city centre. 

  • Subsidised Student Canteen- Diploma students can avail of the Student Canteen which is open in the evenings and offers a wide variety of choices on its menu.
